Three Friday matches highlight the end of a busy week for the Marauders. JV1 and Varsity have road matches at Merrimack. Dismissal is 1:10, after the end of fifth period. All players must have been in prior contact with their 6th and 7th grade teachers. JVI players needing uniform upgrades (if you got a loaner for Tuesday's game), Coach Grabill will be in the Gym during Activity Period on Friday.
JV2 will host a home match with Woodsville at 4:30 at Dresden, and will have their team photo taken beforehand. Players needing uniform adjustments should meet Coach Grabill during Activity Period in the Gym. JV2 also has a home game Monday at Dresden at 4:30 against Bishop Guertin.
The Freshmen will not practice on Friday. We have added an optional Freshman practice on Saturday morning fro 10:00 - 11:30 on the HHS Turf. On Monday, the Freshmen will play the Lightning U14s at Huntley Meadow at 4:30. They will wear Maroon. We plan to offer a bus directly to Huntley at 3:45 on Monday.

Freshmen Flourish in Home Opener, Beat Memorial 6-0
The Freshmen, Hanover's final team to play a home game, made the wait worth it with an entertaining 6-0 victory over Manchester Memorial on Wednesday at The Pasture. It took the visitors a while to find the Dresden complex, but they had plenty of time for a safe warmup before the kickoff. The tone for the match was set early - both teams would see plenty of offensive chances. Hanover had several good looks in the early going, with Jack Gardner firing a warning shot, Jack Stadheim engaging in a scramble with Memorial's athletic goalkeeper Brian Jolicoeur for a loose ball, and Jack McGrath launching his patented long, high, low percentage bomb. Memorial also found a good look early, forcing goalkeeper Ty Nolon to make a diving save. Th2ere would be much, much more where that came from .
Fifteen minutes into the match, Jack Gardner collected the ball just over the midfield line and dashed into space, beating two defenders and finding space for a net-perforating rip. Memorial struck back almost immediately. A pass from deep in their end sent an attacker in alone. It looked offsides, but it wasn't. Fortunately Nolon was off his line to make a great save. Almost immediately afterwards, a ticky-tack foul at the edge of the box on a stationary attacker with his back to the goal resulted penalty kick for Memorial. Nolon cooly stepped to his line and made a diving save to his right to thwart the well-taken kick. He stole the kicker's soul. Amazingly, he wasn't done, making yet another Varsity-level save.
Despite these Memorial moments, Hanover was winning a majority of the midfield battles and gaining an edge in possession. Alex Brackett was doing some great ball winning at sitting center mid, and Theo Jospeh had his best game of the season, connecting with the forwards with precision passes. Augie Krawitt and Liam Wordon were both playing wonderful position soccer, spreading the field wide and giving good service from the flanks. Wordon authored a good shot from the right side.
Just after Soren Stettenheim made a solo run into the attacking zone, a precursor of a second-half skill run that would bear fruit, Stadheim re-entered the game with six minutes to play in the half and gave the Marauders some breathing room, blasting past two defenders and hitting the corner for a 2-0 lead and some welcome breathing room.Berkeley Chamberlain had the final salvo before the half, hitting a left-footed volley that showed how dangerous he can be on the left flank.
The Marauders were getting some of their best defensive play of the young season fro center backs, Owen Smith, Ethan Munson and Jackson Watts. Kevin Choi did good work at both center back and left back. Hanover also received some excellent play from win backs Wyatt Sklarin, Cam Forbush and Tom Mosdal. Forbush was particularly effective at transition play from defense to offense.
Hanover roared out of the blocks in the second half, and sent a clear message with Jack Gardner's second goal off the day, set up by a wonderful assist from Jack Stadheim. Gardner got his head on the ball a short time later, and will be heard from again in this respect. He then turned playmaker, slipping a pass to Simon Taenzer for a shot that forced Jolicoeur to make a wonderful diving save. Taenzer then opened his account with a corner kick that sailed directly into the far corner, a spectacular that produced a modest celebration from the cherubic midfielder. Ian Smith was feeling his oats on a nice play in the box, running a ball down to the baseline and sending a cheeky centering pass back in front.
Hanover was getting good midfield play from Jack Blaisdell and Will Taylor, and good work up top from Gilbert Gordon. At the other end, Ty Nolon wasn't finished with his master class in goalkeeping. Some nonchalant defending allowed a Memorial striker in alone on goal. Nolon made a diving stop to deny the shot, and then dive a second time to deflect the shot off the rebound past the post. Off his line all day to win 50-50 balls and direct the offense, Nolan ended the match with a diving save at the edge of the box on a breakaway. It was a complete performance.
This was a solid performance against a talented but outmatched opponent. Stronger opposition awaits, with a home game next Thursday against Concord. There is much to learn, but this team has made a significant amount of progress in their short time together. Training is Thursday at 4:00. Players should wear white or gold training tops.

Bedford Beats Varsity and JV1 By 2-0 Scores
The Marauder JV1 and Varsity squads got their wakeup call on Tuesday, traveling to Bedford and dropping 2-0 decisions in well-played matches on the Bulldogs' aging turf facility. In the JV match, Bedford scored once in each half and did an excellent job allowing possession in the middle of the park but limiting Hanover's dangerous scoring chances to a precious few.
In the Varsity match, Bedford enjoyed the territorial advantage in the early stages, gaining five corner kicks in the first fifteen minutes. Following one of these, Charlie Adams was in the right spot to head a ball off the line. Joey Perras was standing tall in the net for Hanover and made a nice grab in traffic on another threatening corner.
Hanover began stringing passes together at midfield, and created several good chances, earning fiver corners of their own and seeing headers by Latham Allison and Amane Matsuoka just miss the mark. Hanover's best scoring opportunity in the half came on a quick setup from Charlie Adams to Henry Aspinwall, only to see Henry's short range shots blocked at the last minute.
With five minute to play in an evenly-played first half, Bedford was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, and a match which was being decided by 22 players became decisively altered by a non-player. Bedford's leading scorer Vitor Rodriguez made no mistake with his free kick, beating the Hanover wall and grazing the right post on the way in.
Predictably frustrated, the Marauders nevertheless continued to grow into the game, and had an edge in play throughout the second half. Soon after the interval al, Charlie Adams sent a free kick through the box that narrowly missed connecting with two Marauder teammates. Eli Stack broke into the Bulldog penalty area with a great open look, only to loose possession with a heavy touch.
Eleven minutes into the half, Bedford took advantage of a giveaway at midfield, setting up an odd-man rush into the Marauder end. Matthew Flanagan ended up with an open shot, put it off the crossbar, and headed in his own rebound for a 2-0 score. Surprisingly, Hanover continued to improve their offense, and not get frantic in their attempts to get back in the game. Amane Matsuoka got open on the left side of the box for a drive just under the crossbar that was tipped over and out by Bedford keeper Aidan Wisherd. Adams made several runs on the baseline, and fed a ball through the box from the left side and somehow missed connecting with two onrushing Marauder mates. Freshmen Open The Season With 4-2 Win at Merrimack
The Marauder Freshman Boys opened their 2019 season with a solid 4-2 road win at Merrimack on Monday. Hanover jumped out to a fast 3-0 lead and never trailed, outshooting the host team and nailing down the win with Jack Gardner's third goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining. All 23 players saw action in each half, and the two-way effort could be characterized as a team victory.
The team was businesslike from the start, following a smooth dismissal and routine, well-catered bus ride. After a brisk warmup, the Marauders jumped out to an immediate 1-0 lead when Jack Gardner jumped on a loose ball and found plenty of room to rip a shot into the goal three minutes into the game. Merrimack almost responded after a pass out of the back was intercepted, by Owen Smith came sailing in the clear the ball. Hanover enjoyed a significant edge in possession and was winning most of the contested balls at midfield, with Jack Stadheim, Soren Stettenheim and Jack McGrath providing a lot of the pressure. The match was barely nine minutes old when Gardner stole a pass on the Hanover side of the center circle and blew past the Merrimack defensive back four, breaking in alone for his second goal of the afternoon. Two minutes later, Jack McGrath launched a long, high ball from the left flank that sailed over the Merrimack keeper's head for a 3-0 Hanover lead.
Merrimack had some success in counterattacking, and may have missed a chance to climb back into the game when the official missed a classic Hand 'o God on the box by Tom Mosdal. As the match went past the midway point, the Marauders featured an entirely new lineup, and the results were excellent. The fresh legs at midfield, particularly Theo Joseph, Simon Taenzer and Will Taylor, helped maintain Hanover's territorial edge. Having acquired his newest skin (his away uniform), Gilbert Gordon took a lead pass and broke in alone on goal, just missing to the right with a well-taken shot. In the Marauder defensive end Ty Nolon did a spectacular job coming off his line to meet through balls, and received more than a dozen back passes from trusting teammates.
With several of the starters back win the match for the final five minutes of the half, Gardner's pass to Stadheim at the top of the box almost resulted in a 4-0 lead. Instead, out of nowhere, a long Merrimack shot from the left side took a downward dip at the near post and snuck into the goal. Strong at the end, Stadheim hit a ripper from distance that just slid past the left upright.
Hanover was back on attack at the start of the second half, with Gardner lashing a shot that missed, although not as badly as his first-half moonshot. Minutes later, Ian Smith made an excellent pass from his own half, springing Gardner into space. A New Week - Marauders Ready For The Road
After a week of home games, three of the Marauder teams will have their first road games of the season Monday and Tuesday. The Freshmen lead things off on Monday, with an away game at Merrimack at 4:390 at the Reeds Ferry School. Here's how every road game should work:
Dismissal time: A 2:00 dismissal means finishing sixth period and then going straight to the bus. Players must contact their 7th period teacher earlier in the day to find about homework/missed assignments. Players leaving at 2:00 on Tuesday (JV1 and Varsity to Bedford) should talk to their 7th period teachers on Monday.
Freshmen should try and change into their uniforms prior to departure, potentially during 5th or 6th period. Change after school if you must, but do it quickly. I will have the uniforms for freshmen who did not receive them Friday. I will hold my usually office hours on Monday in the gym during Activity Period.
All teams wear white on the road. This means white uniform, white shorts, white socks and even white shin pad holders. Technically, all accessories must be white.
Players may return home with their parents after an away game. They must confirm this with the coach in charge. The bus driver will inform students of the estimated return time half an hour before arrival.
On Tuesday, both Varsity and JV1 take the same bus to Bedford, leaving after 6th period. Please get to the bus as quickly as possible. The bus will return after the Varsity game at 6:00. JV players may return home with parents after their game, or stay for the Varsity game and return on the bus.
Looking forward to Wednesday, the Freshmen will have their long-awaited home opener against Memorial at 4:30 at Dresden. They may either take the practice bus at 2:45, and wait at Dresden, or go home on the 2:00 bus after school and be dropped at Dresden at 3:30.

On Tuesday, both Varsity and JV1 take the same bus to Bedford, leaving after 6th period. Please get to the bus as quickly as possible. The bus will return after the Varsity game at 6:00. JV players may return home with parents after their game, or stay for the Varsity game and return on the bus.
Looking forward to Wednesday, the Freshmen will have their long-awaited home opener against Memorial at 4:30 at Dresden. They may either take the practice bus at 2:45, and wait at Dresden, or go home on the 2:00 bus after school and be dropped at Dresden at 3:30.
Three players need to finish their concussions testing! On Monday, Archer Judd and Lorenzo Castelli should report to the Training Room with a Chromebook or laptop immediately after school. On Tuesday, Soren Stettenheim should report to the Training Room immediately after school.

Marauders Beat Bishop Guertin 4-1; Bedford Up Next
The Marauders accomplished a number of their goals Tuesday afternoon with a clinical 4-1 victory against Bishop Guertin. Enjoying a significant territorial edge in the first half, Hanover generated 19 shots and saw 18 of them miss, hit the post, or be saved before Henry Aspinwall's strike in the 33rd minute gave the Marauders the first half goal they craved.
Three goals by three seniors in the second half gave the Marauder snipers the fine-tuning they need before taking on Bedford. Charlie Adams scored his second goal of the season and then set up Eli Stack and Blake Palmer. Twenty-four field players got playing time. Andrew Enelow got a well-deserved start in goal.
It didn't take long for Hanover to begin a siege on the BG goal. Blake Palmer missed at close ranger after a setup from Charlie Adams. David Stoffel whistled a shot over the top. Eli Stack broke in alone and was denied after a good save. The Marauders threatened with number of shots from close range after several corner kicks. Eli Stack just missed with a close range deflection on a free kick from Adams. Adams had two shot saved/blocked before a dangerous shot attempt by Palmer was blocked. Kyle Doucette's shot from in close on a corner kick clanged off the crossbar.
Finally, with a number of fresh legs in the lineup, Hanover took the lead when Eric Ringer made a great penetrating run into the BG box before laying the ball off the Aspinwall, who finished with his usual economical aplomb. The Cardinals mustered one of their few dangerous shots with five minutes left in the half, but after 40 minutes the Marauders were in clear control with their 1-0 advantage.
It didn't take long in the second half for the Marauders to assert complete control of the match.
Right back Dylan Kotlowitz stepped deep into the attacking zone on a counter, and threaded a ball to Blake Palmer on the right wing. Palmer beat his defender to the end line and hit a hard centering pass that was slammed him by an onrushing Adams. Ten minutes later, Adams set up Eli Stack with a penetrating run on the left side. An inexplicable call gave Bishop Guertin a penalty kick and a goal with 20 minutes to play, but there was no sign of a rally, Ten minutes later, Adams worked free in the box and laid the ball to Palmer, whose short range left footer gave Hanover a 4-1 lead. Four more Marauders made their varsity debuts in the closing minutes, and each contributed to the seamless control that continued to the final whistle.
The Marauders made progress on several fronts, and now they face a stern early season test in the Bedford Bulldogs, the defending D1 Champion. They will train Sunday 2-4 after days off on Friday and Saturday.
