Everyone Survives the First Night of Soccer

If this blog works as it is supposed to, I get to take my sweet time in the evening to process the day gone by and plan for the day ahead, and you get to start your morning with the latest news.  (I love the HHS web page.  But for the best accurate day to day stuff, this is your best bet.

We had 86 players show up for fitness testing at the track, and as nearly as we can calculate, all of them survived.  We took in a tremendous amount of data, aided by a crack crew of volunteer track coaches and stars.  We were very cautious about personal safety, making sure that the "opt out" option was available for a given event, or even in mid-race.  For some of our younger or newer students, tonight was probably pretty intimidating, even with our team goal of inclusion.  Some of our older and stronger players were eager to stretch and run and compete.  They were, on the whole, good role models.

Every freshman has been assigned to a senior.  It will be that senior's responsibility to maintain contact with their partner.  Each should be able to introduce each other to the group later in the day.

As we look ahead to the next three days of activity at the Dresden Fields (on Rt. 5 south in Norwich, past King Arthur on the left. (look for "Colton Center" sign), we want to state our policy about rain/thunderstorms.  If it's raining, we will play when that choice is left to us.  We are wary about lighting and thunder.  We have plan to evacuate into cars in an emergency, but out options are limited, so we tend to play on the safe side.  All weather updates will be communicated across all platforms.
We should be good for the morning session tomorrow.  Our primary concern is the heat, and we will take several water breaks.  We recommend sunscreen.

We have several updates about our upcoming visit by the Royal Grammar School from Newcastle.  These 30 lads and their coaches will arrive on Tuesday, and will play a match with a Jr./Sr. team Tuesday night.  We had said that we would feed everyone after training Tuesday, prior to the game.  That plan has become impractical.  We will feed all of the players from the Tuesday night game, but the remaining members of the program are on their own for supper.  We would;d love to have players duck home for supper, and return for the game.

We are now lagging behind in our search for host families, so we are going to do something we should have done earlier:  We will now offer the chance to host two Newcastle players for one night only, either Tuesday or Wednesday.  Here is what is required:  For Tuesday hosts, meet your players after the match at Dresden, which will end at 7:45, followed by picnic supper.  Take the players home, put them to bed, wake them up, feed them breakfast, bring them back to Dresden.  For Wednesday hosts:  Meet the players in the evening at HHS.  Take them home and put them to bed.  Wake them up, feed them, and bring them to school.  This is pretty basic, friends, and we would love to have you chime in and help with this.  Freshman parents, this can be a lot of fun.  These are great kids, stuck with a terrible EPL team to root for, hamstring by their tight-fisted owner (Mike Ashey) and his unwillingness to spend.  Great home ground (St. James' Park) and incredible uniforms.  Please contact Coach Grabill with your offers to host.

Remember player colors tomorrow:  Seniors-black;. Juniors-white; Sophomores- blue; Freshmen-yellow (or wear white and we will give you a yellow pine).  Se you at Dresden.
