Marauders Open The Season With a Win over RGS/ Storms Threaten Wednesday

The Marauders capped a good day of productive work by more than 95 players with a convincing 3-0 win over the Royal Grammar School of Newcastle, England.  After a quiet first half, Hanover erupted for three attractive goals to get the season started on a positive note.  This is the fourth visit by the esteemed secondary school, and it has always produced good football an d good fellowship.  RGS was coming off scrimmages with Oyster River High School (hosting on the first day of tryouts).  Hanover had two days to get ready, and it showed.  Although the first ten minutes were dreadful, RGS never came close to threatening, and as they grew into the game the Marauders created some good chances from Eli Stack (via Amane), Amane Matsuoka, Blake Palmer and Pat Osborn.  All could have put a dangerous shot on target.  Only Pat got his on frame, a well-conceived left footer from the top of the box that lacked juice.

Hanover opened the second half brightly, and then minutes after the interval Charlie Adams led a speedy counterattack, combining with Henry Aspinwall, who benefitted from a well-weighted lead pass the set him up for a resounding finish.  Ten minutes later Amane Matsuoka, who had an energetic first half, broke from the left flank into the penalty area, and found space for a thundering right foot back across the grain.  Beautifully taken goal!  Goalkeeper Andrew Enelow continued his playmaking to set up the third goal, the result of some good combination play between Henry Aspinwall and Henry Bernard after receiving Enelow's long throw. Bernard cleverly sent Aspinwall in alone and the result was a predictable clinical finish for a 3-0 lead.

The weather will play a major role in tomorrow's schedule.  Please pay attention:  All training sessions scheduled for Wednesday are cancelled.  The only activities still on the schedule are an attempt to play the RGS game at 10:00 before the storms come, and the Alumni Game at 600, after the storms have rolled through.  That's the plan.  We want all of the Newcastle kids back at Dresden at 9:30.  Whether or not the match is played, that's when they will meet their coaches.  All players who were listed for the morning game should come to Dresden at 9:30.  We will know soon enough whether or not we will be able to play. Safety is first.  Stay tuned for a morning update.
