Off four Marauder teams have a full schedule Thursday, with three games and a special training session for the Freshmen. The JV2s open their season with a home game against Hartford at Dresden at 4:30. The team will take the regular practice bus at 3:45. The Freshmen train at the regular time of 4:00 - 5:30. Coaches Brendan Barth and Eric Jayne will run the session.
Varsity and JV`1 soccer will host Bishop Guertin of Nashua at 4:00 on the HHS turf and the HHS Grass. Both teams will be looking to move to 2-0 on this short, sweet home stand.
Thursday afternoon, the Freshmen tuned up for their Monday road trip to Merrimack with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Marauder Varsity Girls. This was simply the best game that has been played on the Merriman-Branch turf this year. The Girls are ready to defend their State Championship beginning on Saturday, and they were fired up. The Freshmen did a great job defensively, contesting loose balls at midfield and not diving in on tackles. Once again, goalkeeper Ty Noon was a huge presence, quarterbacking the team and standing firm in the box.
After a scoreless first half, both sides stepped up the intensity, and with 20 minutes to play the Girls scored what may be the goal of the year. Ty Nolon made a diving save on a certain goal, and then made an equally stunning save on the rebound. Finally, on the third rebound, they scored, sending their bench into a frenzy.
Coach Grabill, anxious to get to the Parent Meeting, kept trying to end the match in favor of the girls, but they insisted on continuing to play. Imagine their surprise when the Freshmen surged into the Varsity end and scored two quick goals by Jack Gardner and Jack Stadheim at the death of the match. Both teams played superbly, and both have a lot to be excited about.
